Arcosanti, an experimental town in the high desert of Arizona, is Paolo Soleri's most ambitious realization of his arcology concept. Begun in 1970, it was conceived as a prototype urban laboratory, designed to demonstrate how human settlements could be vertically integrated, energy-efficient, and socially vibrant, dramatically reducing humanity's ecological footprint. Arcosanti's compact, multi-use structures aim to conserve land, water, and energy while fostering intense social interaction. Thousands of students and volunteers have participated in its decades of ongoing construction, learning Soleri's unique earth-casting and concrete techniques.

Current State and Ownership: Arcosanti is owned and operated by the Cosanti Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. While envisioned for 5,000 residents, it currently houses a smaller community of staff, long-term volunteers, and workshop participants. It functions as an active educational center, offering tours, a cafe, and a gift shop selling on-site made bells that help fund the project. Arcosanti continues to evolve as an experiment and a beacon for sustainable urban development.
